This Privacy Policy explains how Sobriety Companion LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use the Sobriety Companion mobile and web application and the website at sobrietycompanion.com (collectively, the "App"). By using the App you agree to this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.
1. Information We Collect
a. Information You Provide
- Account & identity: name, email, phone number, date of birth, profile photo, password, and government-issued ID for verification.
- Companion onboarding (Sober Companions and Recovery Specialists only): professional credentials, certifications, résumé/CV, references, and information needed for criminal background checks, identity verification, and drug screenings.
- Recovery information: details you choose to share to be matched with a Sober Companion, intake questionnaires, recovery goals, and other recovery-related information you provide to your companion or to authorized members of your treatment team.
- Communications: messages, in-app calls, and video sessions, plus any content you upload (notes, documents, photos).
- Payment information: handled by our PCI-DSS-compliant payment processor; we do not store full card numbers on our servers.
b. Information Collected Automatically
- Device & usage data: device type, operating system, app version, IP address, language, crash logs, and analytics events.
- Location data: with your permission, approximate or precise location to match you with companions in your area, enable in-person bookings, and support sober transport / safety features.
- Cookies and similar technologies on the website for session management and basic analytics.
c. Information from Third Parties
- Background-check, identity-verification, and drug-screening vendors (for companions and specialists).
- Authorized family members, treatment-team members, or referral partners who you have asked us to coordinate with.
2. How We Use Information
- Provide, operate, and improve the App and its matching, scheduling, messaging, and video features.
- Verify identity, vet companions, and protect users (criminal background checks, credential and reference verification, and drug screening).
- Facilitate peer recovery support sessions, sober-sitting, sober transport, interventions, and other companion services.
- Process payments, reimbursements, and travel/expense facilitation for companions.
- Send service-related notices, security alerts, and (with your consent) marketing communications.
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, security incidents, and violations of our Terms.
- Comply with legal obligations, court orders, and regulatory requirements.
3. Confidentiality of Recovery Information
Information related to substance use disorder treatment is treated with the heightened confidentiality protections of 42 CFR Part 2 and will not be re-disclosed without your written consent except as permitted by law. Information you authorize us to share with a specific member of your treatment team will only be transmitted to that designated recipient under signed authorization.
4. How We Share Information
We share information only as described below:
- With companions you connect with on the platform to deliver the support you've requested.
- With service providers (subprocessors) that operate the platform — for example, cloud hosting, video infrastructure, payments, analytics, customer support tooling, and identity/background-check vendors. These parties are bound by contract and may use information only to provide services to us.
- With authorized recipients you designate (such as a family member, sponsor, or member of your treatment team) when you grant written permission.
- For legal reasons: to comply with law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of Sobriety Companion LLC, our users, or the public.
- In a business transaction: in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to standard confidentiality protections.
We do not sell your personal information.
5. Video Sessions & Messaging
Video sessions are delivered over an encrypted, HIPAA-aligned infrastructure. Sessions are not recorded by Sobriety Companion unless both parties affirmatively consent in advance. Messaging content is encrypted in transit and stored in encrypted form.
6. Data Retention
We retain personal and recovery-related information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the App, comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Where applicable, retention periods follow federal and state laws governing the records of recovery support services.
7. Your Rights & Choices
- Access & correction: review and update your account information in the App or by contacting us.
- State privacy rights: residents of certain U.S. states may have additional rights (e.g., to request deletion or to opt out of certain processing). To exercise these rights, contact support@sobrietycompanion.com.
- Marketing communications: you can opt out of marketing emails using the unsubscribe link in any marketing message.
- Permissions: you can disable location, camera, microphone, and notification permissions in your device settings (some features may not work without them).
8. Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, audit logging, and personnel training to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure; if we become aware of a breach affecting your information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is intended for adults 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under the minimum age in your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
10. Domestic Operation
Sobriety Companion is operated from the United States. If you access the App from outside the U.S., you understand that your information will be processed in the United States, which may have different data-protection laws than your home country.
11. Apple App Tracking Transparency
On Apple devices, where required, we will request your permission via the App Tracking Transparency prompt before tracking you across apps and websites owned by other companies. You can change this setting at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. For material changes, we will provide additional notice (such as an in-app notice or email). Your continued use of the App after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
